Looking for a punt return at the varsity level. I have used a wall in the past and can't seem to get the wall built. I must be doing something wrong. Need help with aiming points as far as width of the wall and how far back to take it to the returner. Any help would be appreciated. JOHN

Remember: There is more yardage (and field position) gained or lost in the kicking game than any other aspect of the game. Like what an advantage it is if you have a kickoff specialist that can drive the ball in the end zone and give the opposition a start on their own 20 everytime.

Our goal on the punt return is

FIRST: Field the ball in the air and not to let it hit the ground and roll for another 20 yards which is easily done these days on artifical turff.

SECOND: Get a 10 yard return.

When most high school punters average 30-35 yards on the punt, a 10 yard return makes for good field position.

We align in a 5 front. Our two DE\'s rush the punter from the outside in and make sure the ball is punted and they are there to recover any bad snaps, block the punt on a bobble, etc.

We have remaining 3 linemen strike the man in front of them and then immediately head for the wall. We send the wall up the has mark to the side of the return.

Corners cover the wide guys: Goal is to make the wide guy or the first wide defender out to their side to \'break stride\' and have to restart on the way down field.

2 LB\'ers have fake run to their side and 2nd receiver. They then go get into the wall after the three linemen. Our spacing is 5 yard intervals on the wall which sprints down the hash 25 - 30 yards depending on the punt.

The opposite DE rushes through the punter and runs up the numbers between the wall and the sideline looking for anything that gets through the wall.

We have two R\'s back. One R is to field the ball - Other R is to block the first defender from the middle of the field to the wall. Receiver should aim for a point that is 3-5 yards all the 1st wall guy. A 5 yard cushion there prevents a defender coming off the block and making contact.

This return has been very successful for us over 50 years of football. It\'s not the flashiest but gets us good field position which is really important, don\'t you think? And usually once or twoice a season we are able to run some back for TDs.
